The streets of Sarajevo once again witnessed a performance by our organization and activist group.
To raise public awareness about the lives of animals on factory farms and to show our support for animals in need of our help, on Saturday, September 30th, 2023, we held a street performance in front of the Eternal Flame titled “Život u zatočeništvu” (Life in Captivity).
This time, we prepared something new to expose the truth about factory farming!
With this performance, we aimed to draw attention to the suffering of animals and the conditions in which they live.
On factory farms, animals are treated as commodities and live in unnatural environments, confined in overcrowded barns, some in small spaces like cages, crates, or boxes. Often, they have so little space that they cannot even turn around or lie down comfortably.
Most animals raised in factories are genetically manipulated to grow larger or produce more milk or eggs than they naturally would. Some chickens grow so unnaturally large that their legs cannot support their immense bodies, leading to hunger or dehydration when they cannot walk to reach food and water. Antibiotics are used to make animals grow faster and keep them alive in unsanitary conditions.
Most of these animals will never feel the warmth of the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until the day they are loaded onto trucks bound for slaughterhouses. Once they grow large enough for slaughter or their bodies are worn out from milk or egg production, these animals are crowded onto trucks and transported for miles through all weather conditions, often without food and water. In the slaughterhouse, those who survive the transport are killed, often while still conscious.
Unfortunately, this is the reality for animals used for meat, dairy, and eggs.
Together with our brave activists, we took to the streets of Sarajevo once more, showing that we will not stop fighting for animal rights, because we can raise awareness and help end this captivity and abuse.
The performance attracted significant attention from many citizens of Sarajevo.
Our activists wore white masks, dressed in black, and had handcuffs on their hands.
The handcuffs symbolize the captivity of all animals currently trapped in industries that exploit them. They signify the animals’ inability to escape to safety and freedom.
Several activists held signs displaying numbers that represent how many animals suffer daily on factory farms and die behind the cold walls of slaughterhouses.
In addition, on television screens, passers-by could see footage from factory farms and slaughterhouses, showing them what actually happens when they purchase animal products and what they are truly supporting.
Factory farming is a global issue, and only through global solutions can we protect animals and improve their welfare.
We believe that our performance succeeded in opening the eyes of some and presenting them with a better and more empathetic choice, which is veganism.
What gives our organization momentum are the positive messages from passers-by who supported us in our mission.
An increasing number of consumers are becoming aware of the problem and joining the movement to end the cruelty inherent in factory farming.
Together, we can change the way the world operates and put an end to the cruelty and suffering of animals.
Join us so that animals can live the lives they deserve!
See you at the next VivaBiH street performance.
